Just found this but wanted to second this because it's very frustrating and a lot of times restarting the game doesn't even work. Discord is great but it's harder for console friends to use, a working in-game voice chat for mac users would be so nice.
Feb 07, 2019 Question: Q: Voice chat is not working on fortnite I have the game Fortnite on my phone and I can’t hear my other players when I have my headphones. I tried turning on voice chat on, deleting the app and reinstalling it but nothing works. Lately, there have been several reports of the voice chat in Fortnite not working properly. Your voice chat might be working perfectly in other games and application but it might be causing issues in Fortnite. This has been there since almost a year but even after a fix patch released by developers, it seems to work its way back in the system.
Troubleshooting Fortnite voice chat issues

- Click on Start.
- Click on Sound.
- On the Playback tab have the player click on their output device (Speakers/Headphones) they want to use as their default then right-click it and select Set as Default Device.
- Click on the Recording tab then have the player click on their input device (microphone) they want to use as their default then right-click it and select Set as Default Device.

More often than not, it’s not a major problem, as users have shared some workarounds that work for them. For example, you can try turning the voice chat option on and off in settings. Many also say restarting and re-plugging the headset does the trick for them.
Some even say reinstalling the game might help.

@FortniteGame Two things, first of all the friends list is claiming my friends are offline when they are not (party system is down?) Second, when you close fortnite and try to open it again, it stays running. (Have to close through Task Manager)
